Reflectance Meter

Caltech India is leading manufacturer of CES 429 Reflectance Meter. The reflectometer is used to measure the reflection properties of surfaces related to opacity. The reflectometer is used in furniture construction, workplace control, lighting design etc. The reflectometer measures the reflectance off the surface in which a light is reflected from the surface. Subsequently, the reflection of the light is compared with an absolute black and an absolute white background, and from this the degree of opacity is determined mathematically. The CES 429 reflectometer measures the surface reflectance according to the currently valid international standards ISO3906-1980, ISO3905, ISO2814.

Opacity is defined as the ability of a coating to prevent the transmission of light. A practical example of this is the case where a yellow wall is painted using a red paint. The greater the opacity the red paint, the more efficient it will be at hiding the underlying yellow colour.

Opacity is defined by how a wet film of the test coating is applied to a black and white patterned substrate. After the film has dried, a reflectance meter or a spectrophotometer is used to measure the amount of light reflected from the overcoated black areas of the substrate. This is then expressed as a percentage of the amount of light reflected from the overcoated white areas. This value is the opacity of the film.

A paint which is highly opaque will obscure the black and white areas to an equal extent. In this situation, equal amounts of light will be reflected from the overcoated black and white areas and consequently an opacity value of 100% will be obtained.

The surface reflection is an important measure to detect, for example, whether a furniture surface for the human eye is too reflective and so unpleasant. The reflectometer CES 429 can measure this reflection directly in the development of furniture decors and the engineer can make a statement of quality.
